Scan Solution
Hey guys, this is not related to LetoDMS.

I want to know what solution do you use for your scanned files. I'm using LetoDMS to manage scanned documents of an Education Public Institute from Brazil. I'm using a Samsung Scanner with Samsung Software to scan and generate searchable PDF's. But I'm not liking the Samsung solution.

Me and the Archivist that works with me think the best solution is to scan the documents to TIFF images wich can be used to print with high quality later and generate the PDF from the TIFF with a low resolution to be used for online/virtual view.

How are you scanning your files guys? I can find a good solution.

Thanks.

RE: Scan Solution
Hi,

If you want to have a professional solution which is powerful you should look after Fujitsu scanners, especially the ones for businesses (e.g. the 6000 series). These scanners are capable of duplex scanning, bring you a high scanning speed and a good document quality. You can also output the files as TIFF for further processing.

Daniel

Thank you for your answer. We will start looking for a new Scanner to buy, but since we are a public institution the buying process is a little slow and bureaucratic, specially in Brazil.

We are using the Samsung CLX-6250FX to scan files.

What do you use to process the TIFF? This is exactly what I want, Scan as TIFF that have a high quality so I can restore the document if needed, but they are heavy so I want to convert the TIFF to a searchable PDF to send for people that request access to a document. We have to be transparent with the public information.

Actually, this could be a LetoDMS feature, upload a TIFF and the server generate a light searchable PDF =).

Since LetoDMS allows me to have Attachments I can have the main document as a TIFF and a PDF 150 dpi as Attachment.

I am using a Windows 7 machine with Xampp and LetoDMS. This was more easy to setup but I found some solution for linux like Tesseract-OCR and gscan2pdf.

I don't want to change to linux because the compatibility with the Scanner. I don't know if it will work on linux and I don't have much time to spend seeking for solutions =/. I don't have much knowledge to setup LetoDMS on linux either, Xampp's very easy to setup.

RE: Scan Solution
Hi,

Maybe this piece of software does what you want: http://www.softinterface.com/Convert-Ima...To-PDF.htm

It also has a command line interface, so you may be able to create a batch job and run it over night.

I know about another tool which is able to read out TIFF images, but i forgot the name. If if i find i can post it here.

Thanks again.

But I think this program does not make Searchable PDF's, and this is very important sice No Searchable PDF's are useless for archival purpose.

This is what I need but the process for buying software is a little complicated. Do you know a Open Source or Free solution?

How about 'convert' from the imagemagick package?
